CORNELIUS, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Students were bussed from a Cornelius middle school following a false pipe bomb threat on Monday morning, according to the Cornelius Police Department (CPD) and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

The threat was reported around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, at Bailey Middle School. CPD officers immediately removed students and faculty from the location. Police said students were bussed to Foamex which is right down the street from the school.

CMS said no devices were discovered following a sweep of the school at around 11:44 a.m., and that nearby Hough High School was also placed into a modified lockdown due to its proximity.

Officials said they located a plastic pipe outside of one of the mobile classrooms that seemed to have been there for quite some time from a possible school project. There was no threat to students or staff, but officers say they “acted with an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of all.”

“Due to the time of day, inclement weather, and the nature of the threat the decision was made to dismiss school,” CMS said. “Buses are at Bailey Middle School transporting to Foamex for pickup. Students will be picked up from FXI Building, 18801 Old Statesville Rd. It will take time to reunify you with your student. Please be patient. Thank you for your cooperation.”

Parents were advised to NOT go to the school and to go to the Foamex location at 18801 Old Statesville Road. That’s where they can pick up their kids, per the police department.

Officers will be at the scene assisting students and answering questions from parents.
