ASHE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – A driver was killed after his vehicle went down an embankment in the North Carolina mountain region last month, North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

Troopers responded to calls regarding the incident around 3:10 p.m. on Clint Gilley Road at Heavenly Mountain View. Warrensville resident John John Shoemake was found suffering from injuries and was pronounced dead on scene.

An initial investigation stated that Shoemake was in a Chevy truck loaded with gravel and was backing down Heavenly Mountain View when his truck drove off the right side of the road and went down an embankment. Troopers said the vehicle was not equipped with seatbelts.

The roadways were closed for two hours during the course of the investigation.
