UNION COUNTY, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A massive manhunt was underway Wednesday for home break-in suspects in Union County after a car chase, crash, and foot chase all went right through the HighGate neighborhood off Providence Road in the Weddington area.

The sheriff’s office used a helicopter, dogs, and ground crews to search all afternoon.

They caught one suspect, but still haven’t tracked down the others.

Deputies don’t believe the suspects are in Union County anymore.

The search happened near the Mecklenburg County line on Providence Road, so it involved law enforcement from two counties.

The crime scene rattled the neighborhood.

“It makes you nervous, it makes you a little bit more cautious,” said a neighbor who didn’t want to use her name.

The sound was “like a bang” and startled the neighbors.

It was the suspects’ car smacking into a tree and crashing.

Deputies were after the suspects because they said they broke into a home in the HighGate neighborhood in the middle of the day on Wednesday.

But the suspects got a surprise because the people were home .

As soon as they called 911, the suspects took off, crashing their car and running away.

The search put schools on lockdown and neighbors on alert.

“We saw sheriff’s vehicles and sheriffs on foot running down Red Willow toward the crash and then it was chaos,” said the neighbor.

The sheriff’s office says they had as many as 40 officers from different departments all out searching for the suspects.

Queen City News crews saw an officer with a long gun flung over their shoulder on Providence Road during the search.

“The back of our house, the woods, the reserves down to the creek, they were all over the place.”

The break-in left neighbors uneasy and taking steps to stay safe.

“I automatically lock my backdoors,” said the neighbor.

The sheriff’s office says they’re working to identify the other suspects.

Deputies say the home break-in appears to be an isolated case, and they do not believe there are any threats to the community.

Gone are the days when you could leave your doors open so your kids could run in and get something to drink then run back outside to play with the other kids in the neighborhood. Now you can no longer leave your doors unlocked or let your kids go out to play. These ppl have slowly but surely stolen our peace. But I refuse to be a victim...Come on! I have something for your criminal ass!
