MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Police are seeking charges against a 15-year-old boy after police say the student made violent threats against Monroe High School.

The Monroe Police Department said the teen for the alleged threats made Sunday night, the latest in a long string across the state over the last few weeks. Officers say they worked in partnership with Union County Public Schools to track down the information, interview witnesses, and find the individual who made the threat.

Following the suspect’s allegations, he has been disciplined according to UCPS policies.

Early Monday morning, investigators executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home. Officers did not find a weapon in the home. Officers will charge the unnamed teen through the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Monroe Police increased patrols at Monroe High School Monday in addition to the two school resource officers already stationed on campus.

“We are seeing a disturbing spike in threats of violence against schools across the country that are causing widespread fear and panic,” Monroe Police said. “Children, teachers, and staff should be able to go to school every day without fear of becoming a victim of violent acts. The safety of our schools is a top priority, and we will continue to take all threats seriously. Those responsible for threats of this nature will be criminally charged.

Anonymous tips can always be submitted through MPD’s free, smart phone app or by calling Union County Stoppers at 704-283-5600.
