SHELBY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The 100th anniversary of the Cleveland County Fair has been delayed two days from the effects of Hurricane Helene Thursday and Friday.

The scheduled opening for the centennial event was canceled, and organizers extended the closure into Friday as the storm left thousands whiteout power and roads flooded in the county. The area remains under a Wind Advisory until 7 p.m. Friday.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we navigate this ‘fair weather,’” they said in a social media post. “If you’ve been to the fair before, you know it’s part of the tradition, and this year, Hurricane Helene is taking it to the next level for our 100th anniversary!”

The fair is scheduled to run through Oct. 6. It is held at the fairgrounds on East Marion Street in Shelby.

Gates are slated to open at 9 a.m. Saturday, if organizers deem it safe to operate. Performances include the Academy of Performing Arts, Above the Barre Dance, John Norris and Dangerous feats of Comedy.
