CHARLOTTE (PINPOINT WEATHER) — Trendy weather terms? Polar Vortex? Thunder snow, derecho . . . and now the term of the day is “dirty side” of a hurricane and it impacts us in the Carolinas.

Here’s what it is: the northeast quadrant of a tropical system is the most unstable. In the northern hemisphere, storms spin counterclockwise. Winds are stronger there, all the deep tropical moisture wraps around the storm and instability is greatest, often producing strongest storm surge, higher surface winds and often times tornadoes. And that’s important for us cause we are going to be in that quadrant, the dirty side.
