KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The town of Kings Mountain confirms a person has died as a result of Hurricane Helene.

On September 27, just after 10 a.m., Kings Mountain Communications Center received a notification that a tree had fallen on an individual on N. Gaston Street.

Crews on the scene located Paul Eugene Miller, who was trapped underneath the tree. There was a second individual, later identified as Melissa Neisler Lawerence, 63 of Kings Mountain, who was also trapped.

Kings Mountain Fire Department worked to free Miller from the downed tree, but unfortunately, Lawerence did not survive.

Miller was transported from the scene to Atrium Health in Shelby.
