CORNELIUS, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Cornelius Police are sending essential emergency supplies to the devastated North Carolina mountain region where Hurricane Helene left a path of destruction and paralyzed residents that are now desperate for help.

Three trailers were loaded on Monday and four total over the course of the past 48 hours, the department said. One of those trailers was set to head to Black Mountain, about 20 minutes east of Asheville where I-40 remains closed. I-26, however, is open.

Residents in the mountains impacted by the storm flocked to Shelby this week to stock up on water supplies and other essentials.

So far the death toll from the storm has surpassed 100.
