ASHEVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Students at UNC Asheville will be out of class for at least a month due to the impacts of Hurricane Helene, the university’s leadership announced Tuesday.

UNCA Chancellor Kimberly van Noort wrote in a letter to the campus community that the campus itself will remain closed until at least Oct. 14 and classes will not resume until at least Oct. 28.

Hurricane Helene’s death toll passes the 150 mark after South Carolina adds to its tally

“We have suspended all traditional university operations, and only essential employees will be permitted on campus,” she said. “However, we are not done for the semester. Academic continuity planning has begun, and we’ll have more information very soon as our assessments continue.”

Asheville, like much of western North Carolina, was ravaged from flooding and high winds that shut down access to the city and power for days. It received 17 inches of rainfall last week.

The chancellor said within 72 hours of the storm, all on-campus students — at least 1,600 — were safely relocated.

She also noted that a UNC Asheville disaster relief fund has been established. Contributions will support the entire campus community.

“Bulldogs, you are resilient and we look forward to when we can welcome you home,” van Noort said.
