NORTH CAROLINA (STORYFUL) — Powerful and dangerous floods caused major destruction in the village of Chimney Rock near Lake Lure, North Carolina, after heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Helene caused the Broad River to burst its banks.

This footage from Banff Luther shows damage to buildings and roads in the village, and the ruins of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, a pedestrianized garden bridge over the Broad River maintained by community members, which was entirely destroyed by the storm.

Banff told Storyful he shot the footage on Friday shortly after the storm had passed. “The devastation is beyond words. We are doing what we can to help each other,” he said.

“Chimney Rock’s gone. Flowering Bridge is gone,” Banff is heard saying while filming the devastation. “I’m not sure what they’re going to do to get us out of here.”

Rutherford County Emergency Management on Saturday said it had “secured multiple air rescue resources to airlift citizens” out of the Chimney Rock Village and Lake Lure area.
