HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Duke Energy is conducting a nuclear siren test on Wednesday that will be heard within a 10-mile radius, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

The test will start at 11:50 a.m. in the Emergency Planning Zones near the McGuire Nuclear Station and the Catawba Nuclear Station. Officials say it will last for about three minutes and will be heard within a 10-mile radius of either facility.

“Please do not be alarmed—this is only a test to ensure the proper functioning of the sirens in the event of an actual emergency. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” Charlotte Fire said.

They will sound when an emergency situation presents a danger. The tests are to make sure everything 'works' when they go off and to familiarize the public of the sound. The booklets are no longer sent out with the test dates and fallout shelters for your area in case of a nuclear danger.
