CMPD to put federal funding towards crime labs, officer OT, cadet program

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – $569,529 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Justice has been allocated by the Bureau of Justice Assistance through the City of Charlotte for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, the department announced on Thursday.

The money is part of the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG). The breakdown is as follows.

Meck County Sheriff

$85,434 will be allocated to the sheriff’s office courtesy of CMPD as the city is required to share some of the proceeds with the county. The sheriff’s office will put the funds towards several areas including training, advertising, equipment, and the detention center.

Police Cadet Program

$303,834 will provide ten students with education, training, and future employment with CMPD.

Crime Lab Processing

$7,752 will go towards forensic evidence and crime lab analysis such as fingerprint and DNA testing and also towards reducing backlogs of cases.

Patrol Overtime

$172,509 has been approved to go towards allowing officers to work overtime at the neighborhood level.
