CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — As if North Carolina wasn’t beautiful enough. The Northern Lights were visible Thursday night across the North Carolina skies.

Here are some photos sent to us from viewers in Newton and Kannapolis, Upstate South Carolina, and the North Carolina mountain region.

MORE: There’s a chance NC could see Northern Lights Thursday night

It is unusual for the lights, known as a geomagnetic storm or the aurora borealis, to be visible this far south. Earth was hit by a strong solar radiation storm event Wednesday that was followed by the geomagnetic storm, space weather officials said.
