RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – An inmate housed at Lieber Correctional Institution has died following a fight that broke out Monday afternoon.

Devin Javonne Wilson, 29, was stabbed when a group of inmates began fighting in a common area of their assigned housing unit. Wilson died at the prison.

Three other inmates were taken to a local hospital for what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, according to Chrysti Shain, director of communications for the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Wilson’s death is being investigated as a suspected homicide by the SCDC Inspector General’s office with help from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Crime Scene unit and Dorchester County Coroner.

Inmate records show Wilson was booked into the jail on second-degree burglary and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature convictions in August 2017. Documents revealed he attempted to escape from prison in Dec. 2021 and has a long list of disciplinary sanctions.

His projected release date was listed as January 2028.

That jail is a max for lifers from what I remember. Realistically nothing they do will rehabilitate them enough to be released. At that point they live by different rules because there is nothing else you can do to them prisoners. Their lives are gone to the system. Now if they have started putting lower end offenders in the mix that’s a huge problem and very dangerous.
