NORTH CAROLINA ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — We knew it was coming eventually, but it looks like that first freeze is on the horizon in the high country. Monday’s cold front brought us our first push of cooler air, but our next drop in temperatures will come on Tuesday.

High temperatures in the Charlotte area will only make it into the mid-60s on Tuesday, while temperatures struggle to get out of the 40s in Boone and Jefferson. There will be a few areas of frost in the mountains on Tuesday morning as well.

Monday Outlook: Warmer start, temps stretch into 70s around Charlotte

The first freeze will occur Tuesday night into Wednesday morning for the mountains. That is when temperatures will fall back into the upper 20s and lower 30s across spots like Boone and Jefferson. This is not an unusual time for that first freeze, as we typically see the first freeze between early and mid-October in the mountains.

The foothills tend to see their first freeze in mid to late October. While the Charlotte region and points east usually see their first freeze in early to mid-November.

Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30s Wednesday morning across the foothills and Piedmont, so patchy frost can’t be ruled out. But a freeze is very unlikely in those locations. The sandhills will likely stay in the 40s Wednesday morning.

Another big note about Tuesday night is that the mountain elevations above 3500 feet may see their first snowflakes of the season, as an upper-level disturbance moves through. This won’t amount to anything, but it does give a sense of how cold it will be towards the western Carolinas through the middle of this week.

High temperatures on Wednesday will struggle to get out of the 50s across the Charlotte region. The mountains only top out in the 40s!

Another freeze looks likely Thursday morning for the mountains, with more 20s in the forecast. We are looking at 30s across the Charlotte metro area, with some patchy frost in the foothills and Piedmont on Thursday morning.

Be sure to bundle up if you are headed to the mountains for any recovery efforts. If you are donating to drives, coats, and other warm clothes are being requested as temperatures start to turn colder.

Conditions will warm back up into the weekend, with highs climbing back into the 70s by Saturday and Sunday. Back in the 50s and 60s for the mountains by the weekend.
