WILKES COUNTY, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A man has died after being struck by a pickup truck while directing traffic outside his disabled car in Wilkes County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Around 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, highway patrol responded to the crash on Clingman Road at Bethel Road. A 1990 Ford F-250 was going north on Clingman Road when it hit a man who was in the northbound lane directing traffic after his car was disabled and partially in the road, officials said.

The man, 48-year-old Lester Lee Wisenhunt, was wearing a reflective vest at the time of the incident. Highway patrol said he died of his injuries at the scene.

A 69-year-old man was driving the Ford and was uninjured. Charges are pending once the investigation is finished.

Investigators don’t believe speed and impairment are contributing factors in the crash. Clingman Road was closed for about two hours during the on-scene investigation.
