MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) – Early in-person voting begins on Thursday in North Carolina.

Election officials are set to open 419 early voting sites across the state.

Despite Hurricane Helene’s destruction of the western portion of the state, all 100 counties will have early voting options available .

Several counties, including Buncombe, Madison, and Watauga , modified voting schedules to add more flexibility for poll workers and voters.

Karen Brinson Bell, Executive Director of the NC State Board of Elections, said they will open 76 of the 80 planned early voting sites in the 25 counties listed in the federal disaster declaration.

Bell said countless people worked tirelessly to ensure that all registered voters in the hardest-hit areas could vote, regardless of disruptions to power and internet service, water resources, and road travel.

“An enormous amount of credit goes to our emergency management and FEMA partners, power companies, and, of course, the county boards of elections in the western part of the state,” Bell said. “To have almost all early voting sites open after such a devastating storm is an effort all North Carolinians should be proud of. We are especially grateful to residents of western North Carolina who suffered greatly from the storm but who will show up to work at early voting sites this week.”

Bell said 65 percent of North Carolina voters cast their ballot during in-person early voting in 2020. Early voting will be available until Nov. 2, the Saturday before Election Day.
