    UVA basketball coach Tony Bennett to retire

    RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Tony Bennett, head coach for the University of Virginia’s (UVA) Men’s Basketball team, will retire just months after signing a contract extension.

    Bennett, who led the Cavaliers to their first and only NCAA National Championship in 2019, had been coaching the team since 2009 and signed a contract extension in June which would have kept him with the team until at least 2030.

    According to the university, Bennett will officially announce his retirement at a press conference at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18.

    The Cavaliers’ first regular season game will take place at home at against the Campbell University Fighting Camels at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6.
