CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — I-77 north in southwest Charlotte was closed due to a tractor-trailer on fire, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

Around 10 a.m. on Saturday, crews responded to the fire at I-77 north at Westinghouse Blvd near Exit 1. Medic says they did not respond to the scene.

Charlotte Fire says the incident involved a UPS tractor powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), which is highly volatile and could cause a catastrophic explosion. When crews arrived on scene, the tractor was fully engulfed in flames. Fire personnel worked to extinguish the fire while ensuring that the CNG tanks were properly cooled.

Several Charlotte Fire apparatuses, including the department’s Hazardous Materials Unit, were deployed to assist in managing the incident.

Officials say the driver of the tractor detected the issue early, pulling over near the rest area on I-77 North before the situation escalated. He exited the vehicle, resulting in no injuries during this incident.

To ensure public safety and environmental protection, the Mecklenburg County Environmental Department was notified and is conducting tests to assess any potential contamination of local storm drains due to runoff from the firefighting efforts. The department will also assist in the cleanup process to mitigate any environmental impacts.

According to NCDOT, as of 3:30 p.m., only exit ramp 1 (I-485) remains closed.
