CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — The spotlight of the presidential race brings Barack Obama to the Tar Heel State on Friday with Election Day less than two weeks away.

The former president is set to hold an evening rally for the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz ticket at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Democratic surrogates have been in and out of the Queen City all week, with DNC Chair Jaime Harrison making a few stops in Charlotte on Thursday. The South Carolinian expects Obama to stick to his bread and butter during his speech, hope.

“Democrats know that America’s greatness is in her future, and it’s a hopeful and joyful future,” said Harrison. “Its people are tired of the bigotry. They’re tired of the hateful rhetoric. They are tired of division. They just want a little bit of hope.”

Whether or not Democrats have the stronger message may not matter, as the polls show North Carolina in a dead heat when it comes to the race for president. A new Marist poll out Thursday has former President Donald Trump up 2 points over Vice President Harris, with a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.6 percentage points.

Anderson Clayton, chair for North Carolina Democrats, acknowledged how close the race is, calling NC competitive, and a swing state, “which means that every single effort that we can make to get out there and knock doors matter.”

Republicans also are not slowing down in crunch time. VP nominee Sen. J.D. Vance is set to hold a town hall in Monroe around the same time Obama is set to take the stage in Charlotte.
