A San Tan Valley dog has a new lease on life after being saved from drowning by Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies.

On Sunday morning, neighbors called to report a dog in distress in a flooded canal near Hunt Highway and Bella Vista Road. Two deputies “found the animal fighting for its life,” according to PCSO.

Both deputies come from a ranching background and keep lassos in their vehicles just in case. They were able to lasso up the pooch and pull it to safety.

"My deputies do everything they can to keep the community safe, and our pets are part of our community too," PCSO Sheriff Mark Lamb stated in a Facebook post. "I am very proud of these deputies for using their unique skills to save a life. This is Pinal County policing at its finest."

The dog, identified as a 6-year-old lab mix named Aspen, was turned over to Pinal County Animal Care and Control.

Aspen is microchipped and animal control is working to find its owner.
