Mets at MLB trade deadline: What they've done so far and moves they can still make
NEW YORK — For the Mets, the eve of the trade deadline this season has brought hope and a far different mood than 2023. Last season, the uncertainty was palpable. The mood was jarring in the visiting clubhouse in Kansas City after trades were hatched to send away Justin Verlander, Mark Canha and Tommy Pham.

Pete Alonso homered to start a six-run fourth inning and the New York Mets blew out the Minnesota Twins 15-2, turning the opener of an interleague series between playoff contenders into a lopsided laugher. Jeff McNeil and Luis Torrens each drove in three runs for the Mets, who batted around twice in three innings. Every starter had at least one RBI besides newcomer Jesse Winker, who singled and scored in his first Mets start before getting lifted in the sixth. Winker was acquired from Washington in a trade finalized Sunday morning. Jose Quintana fell behind 1-0 after five pitches but kept Minnesota off the scoreboard after that, throwing six effective innings to win his second consecutive start.

WATCH: Tyrone Taylor makes spectacular grab to rob home run in Mets' game vs. Twins
NEW YORK — One of the prettiest catches of the Mets' 2024 season now belongs to Tyrone Taylor. With the Mets leading 11-1 in the top of the seventh inning, Ryan Jeffers led off the frame with a deep fly ball to left center field. Taylor, who was a defensive replacement for newcomer Jesse Winker, went sprinting back and leapt to bring back a potential home run ball.

Mets cut reliever Jake Diekman and promote fellow lefty Matt Gage from Triple-A Syracuse
NEW YORK (AP) — In a surprising move Monday, the New York Mets cut veteran reliever Jake Diekman and promoted fellow left-hander Matt Gage from Triple-A Syracuse. Diekman was 2-3 with a 5.63 ERA and four saves in a team-high 43 appearances after signing a $4 million, one-year contract with the Mets in February. He earned a huge save at Yankee Stadium last Tuesday, striking out red-hot slugger Aaron Judge with a runner aboard in the ninth inning of a 3-2 victory.
Mets Notebook: Jake Diekman gets DFA’d, lefty Matt Gage recalled
Nearly a week ago, left-hander Jake Diekman became an unlikely Mets hero when he struck out Aaron Judge in the bottom of the ninth inning at Yankee Stadium, securing a Subway Series win for the team from Queens. But after giving up three earned runs to the Atlanta Braves over the weekend in two outings, the Mets decided they had seen enough of the veteran lefty’s struggles.
Mets ride three huge innings to blowout of Twins
Pete Alonso homered to lead off a six-run fourth inning on Monday night for the host New York Mets, who rolled to a 15-2 win over the Minnesota Twins in the opener of a three-game interleague series. Eight starters had at least one hit and one RBI for the Mets, who later added five- and four-run innings while snapping a two-game losing streak and improving to 16-9 this month. Jesse Winker, the lone New York starter without an RBI, was 1-for-2 with a walk before being lifted for Tyrone Taylor following the fifth inning. Taylor went 2-for-2 with two runs. Jeff McNeil and Luis Torrens had three RBIs apiece for the Mets, and Torrens had a game-high three hits. Byron Buxton laced an RBI single in the first and Ryan Jeffers homered in the ninth for the Twins, who have lost six of their past 10. Buxton finished 2-for-2 with a walk. Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson (3-2) opened the game with three scoreless innings before Alonso homered on his second pitch of the fourth. The next six batters also reached -- including McNeil, Torrens and Francisco Lindor, all of whom had RBI singles -- before Brandon Nimmo and J.D. Martinez hit consecutive sacrifice flies. Nimmo's RBI, which made it 5-1, knocked Woods Richardson from the game. Cole Sands took over on the mound. The Mets sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth, when Nimmo (single), Martinez (forceout), Mark Vientos (bases-loaded walk), McNeil (sacrifice fly) and Harrison Bader (hit by pitch) all collected an RBI. Alonso and McNeil had run-scoring doubles in the seventh before Torrens hit a two-RBI double off outfielder Matt Wallner, who made his first major league pitching appearance. Jose Quintana (6-6) cruised to the win after allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out five over six innings. Jose Butto earned his second save of the year, permitting four hits and a run over the final three innings. Woods Richardson gave up six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two over 3 1/3 innings. Wallner, who threw mostly pitches clocked below 50 mph, got the final four outs without allowing a run. --Field Level Media.
