It’s Monday, July 29, and the Minnesota Twins (58-46) and New York Mets (55-50) open a 3-game series at Citi Field in New York, NY tonight. New York’s July surge was dulled by a couple of weekend losses to the Braves which dropped them back into 3rd in the National League East. Minnesota picked up a win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The Twins quietly sit in 2nd in the American League Central and atop the Wild Card Standings.
Mets trade for Upstate NY native, send another player to Syracuse
Peter Sblendorio, New York Daily News (TNS) This trade deadline is playing out much differently for the New York Mets than last year’s. The Mets continued buying Sunday, acquiring outfielder Jesse Winker from the Washington Nationals in a trade that adds an established left-handed bat for their postseason push.

Mets' Paul Blackburn: Set for Mets debut Friday
Blackburn will make his Mets debut Friday against the Angels, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Blackburn has yet to be officially added to the roster after being acquired via trade from the Athletics on Tuesday, but that will happen this weekend. The right-hander has been limited to just nine starts this season because of a foot injury but has been decent when healthy, holding a 4.41 ERA and 38:14 K:BB over 51 innings. With Blackburn aboard, the Mets will send Tylor Megill to the bullpen.
Mets' Sean Manaea: Fans 11 in seventh win
Manaea (7-4) picked up the win Tuesday, scattering two hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over the Twins. He struck out 11. The veteran southpaw tied his season high in innings while setting a new season high in Ks, as Manaea generated an eye-popping 23 swinging strikes among his 96 pitches. He's been outstanding over the last six weeks, giving up three earned runs or less in eight of his last nine starts while posting a 2.58 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 52:21 K:BB through 52.1 innings over that stretch, and Manaea's impressive run likely contributed to the Mets' decision not to make a more significant rotation addition than Paul Blackburn at the trade deadline. Manaea is scheduled to make his next start on the road early next week in St. Louis.
Adrian Houser: Heads to open market
The Mets released Houser on Wednesday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Houser will head to free agency after he went unclaimed off waivers upon being designated for assignment last weekend. The right-hander opened the season in the Mets' rotation, posting an 8.55 ERA over seven starts before he was permanently moved him to the bullpen in late May. Houser turned in a 3.28 ERA over 35.2 innings as a reliever, but he didn't notice much of a bump in his strikeout rate (16.8 percent) and had mostly underwhelming underlying statistics. He'll look to catch on elsewhere as organizational starting pitching depth and may have to settle for a minor-league contract.

Winker to the Mets, Adam to the Padres
The New York Mets acquired outfielder from the Washington Nationals last night in exchange for pitching prospect Tyler Stuart. Winker, 30, was signed by the Washington Nationals as a free agent this past offseason on a one year, $2 million deal. The lefthanded hitting corner outfielder was coming off a pair of bad seasons with the Mariners in 2022 and the Brewers in 2023, greatly diminishing his market this past offseason. He has bounced back with a strong 2024 campaign, slashing .257/.374/.419 in 379 plate appearances, and going 14 for 18 on stole base attempts after having stolen a total of three bases in his major league career prior to 2024. He was somebody who was talked about as a potential trade target for the Rangers.
