Evan says Mets walk-off saved season, but doesn't have confidence in this team to make run

Heading into Thursday’s series finale against the lowly Marlins, Evan believed that a loss to Miami would mean the death of the 2024 season.

Late in Thursday’s game, as the New York bats could not figure out Roddery Munoz, Evan believed the end was near, even in mid-June.

“As the Mets were struggling to get base hits off a young pitcher no one has ever heard of, I saw the death of the season,” Evan said.

But, suddenly, J.D. Martinez breathed life back into the season, with help from Rob Manfred and the third Wild Card team in the modern postseason format.

“And then something magical happened. The New York Mets season was on a respirator,” Evan said. “We were all gonna announce the time of death. And J.D. Martinez, with one swing, turned what could have been the death of a season into ‘season is back on.’

“That’s a swing game in terms of the series, in terms of all the work this team needs to accomplish to get back towards .500 and claw their way back into a real pennant race.”

The Mets are just three games out of a playoff spot, and because of that, Evan says the 2024 season is certainly not dead, though he believes it could have been before Martinez’s walk-off home run sailed over the fence at Citi Field. Still, when it comes to whether or not he believes in these Mets, Evan is not so sure, noting his lack of belief in Brandon Nimmo, Pete Alonso, and this core to lead a winning streak to get into the playoff picture, unlike his belief in the 2016 team's surge to the postseason. So he left it up to the rest of the fanbase to decide.

“Is the season back on?” Evan said. “In a game like that, especially the way you come back…does that kind of win actually make you say, ‘we’re coming’?

"I'm thrilled they won...but do I believe they're gonna kick the Padres' ass this weekend? Not really."
