As the Mets continue to roll, winners of five in a row and nine of their last 11 games, but Gio believes it’s going to take a lot more to convince David Stearns that the wouldn’t be better off rebuilding the roster at the trade deadline.

“In their minds, are they saying ‘Pete Alonso is gone, Jeff McNeil is gone, Starling Marte is gone, and if we can get some teams at the deadline that are gonna overpay for these guys because they’re desperate, this season in 2024 doesn’t mean anything to us, because we have to take this opportunity now to turn this roster over,’” Gio said. “That’s the fascinating thing.

“They gotta keep winning to the point where they're 7, 8, 9, 10 games over .500 look like a legitimate contender, because this, from the get-go, the thought process from Steve Cohen and David Stearns on this season was ‘We'll throw out this group of guys. We're not gonna improve the roster all that much. We're gonna go after one free agent Yamamoto…and we're going to use this season as a transition season after what happened the year before with the whole blow up with Scherzer and Verlander and everything else.’”

Boomer disagrees, and says if the Mets are within striking distance of a playoff spot, Stearns and Steve Cohen, who expressed all year that this team should be playoff caliber, will go for it.

“There is no way that if this team is close, that they’re selling,” Gio said. “My gut tells me that if they’re in it, they’re going for it.”

Gio doesn’t see the Mets buying this summer, and it will come down to either selling or standing pat.

“So, if the Mets are .500 at the trade deadline and a game and a half out of a wild card spot, are they buying?” Gio said. “I don't think that they are.”
