Last Saturday, New York Mets star Pete Alonso said that he’d likely join the Home Run Derby if he makes the 2024 MLB All-Star Game roster.

“If I’m selected to the All-Star team, then I am definitely open to doing it, Alonso said (via The New York Post ).

True enough, he got both items crossed out on Sunday when it was revealed that Alonso will be part of the All-Star Game in Arlington. He later shared a post on Instagram acknowledging his All-Star status and announcing his participation in the upcoming Home Run Derby.

“I am so honored to be selected as an All-Star and represent the @Mets! I’m excited to announce that I will participate in the Home Run Derby!!! #LFGM,” Alonso wrote.

The news of Alonso making the All-Star and joining the Derby doesn’t come without controversy, however. Many fans think that the MLB was simply forced to add Alonso to the All-Star Game roster to ensure his Derby participation.

“Ah so he bribed MLB for it”

“Ahh, so that’s why he was selected”

“Funny, cause he didn’t deserve to be in the All-Star game. I smell collusion.”

    “lol he forced their hand”

“MLB picked him to the AS team for literally that reason”

“Love Pete but seems like MLB let him in just for the derby. Lindor and Nimmo should’ve made it no question.

“That’s pretty embarrassing for many people involved including him”

Alonso has become a fixture in the Derby, as this will be his fifth time in the event. He has won it two times already and needs one more to tie the record set by Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr.

On the season, The Polar Bear is hitting .243 with 18 home runs and 48 RBIs. He had 46 home runs in 2023 and 40 dingers in 2022.
