Distressed swimmer rescued near New Jersey coast by fisherman and his son

A New York swimmer in danger of going under was rescued by a fisherman and his son after being swept out by the tides.

Pete Ordane, 34, entered the water in Queens on Monday before being pulled out between the city and Sandy Hook, a barrier spit in Middletown Township, New Jersey.

The fisherman's boat pulled Mr. Ordane from the water at 9 a.m. and 2 miles off the coast, the Middletown Township Police Department said in a release.

"We're assuming it's Breezy Point because he had mentioned Queens, but we don't have an exact location of where he went into the water," Middletown Deputy Police Chief Paul Bailey told NJ Advance Media.

Breezy Point is five miles from Sandy Hook across the water.

Mr. Ordane was taken to a marina in Middletown and was found to be in good condition by medical personnel.

He told police he treaded water for several hours before being rescued. Officials gave him dry clothes and food and arranged his transportation back to New York City.

"The Middletown Police commend the commercial fisherman and his son, who reside in the Port Monmouth section of Middletown and wish to remain anonymous, for taking such valiant actions and undoubtedly saving Ordane's life," MTPD said.
