Yankees, Mets hopeful as second half of season gets underway

NEW YORK (PIX11) — The second half of the Major League Baseball season gets going Friday. The New York Mets are in Miami taking on the Marlins. The New York Yankees are at home taking on the Tampa Bay Rays.

We enter the second half and the Mets and Yankees are alive and well and have hope. It is now a sprint for both teams.

The Yankees came into the season with expectations, and as we approach the MLB trade deadline, general manager Brian Cashman has no other choice to add given the fact they are good and the uncertainty of Juan Soto’s future in the Bronx. A swing-and-miss bullpen arm would be at the top of the list. They also need a healthy Giancarlo Stanton and Alex Verdugo, Anthony Volpe and Gleyber Torres to get going once again. Aaron Judge and Soto can only take you so far.

For the Mets, they are hopeful as well. We are a long way away from the Mets being 11 games under .500. The Mets are now three games over and are in the thick of the wild card race in the National League.

President David Stearns took a wait-and-see approach to this year, and his team has shown him that they deserve reinforcing. The biggest need is the bullpen as well. The thought of moving Pete Alonso at the trade deadline has come and gone as the Mets are relevant.

Sports is a strange entity. That is why I love it. The Yankees are the expected, the Mets are not. Often the unexpected is more enjoyable.

There is no question the Mets are fun and the chemistry on the team is off the charts. They will get starter Kodai Senga back at some point, and their lineup has been really productive.

It is shaping up to be a fun fall for baseball fans in New York City, which is awesome to see. Now Stearns and Cashman need to add to their teams for two completely different reasons.
