Mets’ Tyrone Taylor batters Gerrit Cole again in big offensive night

Tyrone Taylor is known for his defense.

Against Gerrit Cole , though, the outfielder’s bat comes alive — and did so again in a 12-3 win over the Yankees , as the Mets finished off a sweep of the Subway Series.

Taylor entered Wednesday 3-for-6 with a homer and a double off the Yankee right-hander and that was before Taylor hit a two-out homer off Cole in the third inning.

Taylor later added a leadoff single to left in the fifth and a run-scoring base hit just over the leaping Gleyber Torres and into right field that knocked Cole out of the game in the sixth.

It was Taylor’s third three-hit night of the season.

Asked what he liked most about his night, Taylor said, “Winning.”

And even when Taylor didn’t get a hit, he was productive. His grounder to third in the eighth led to a run, as Yankee third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera made a throwing error to home, which allowed Jeff McNeil to score from third.

But it’s his performance against Cole that really stood out.

“I was focused on being ready for the heater,’’ said Taylor, who hit a 2-2 four-seamer out for his sixth homer of the season. “I’m thankful to have success off him.”

He said he’s been able to use that success to inform how Cole might approach him in his next at-bat.

“He’s very smart,’’ Taylor said. “I try to think like him.”

To show that his glove still plays, Taylor added a diving catch in left-center to rob Alex Verdugo of a leadoff hit in the bottom of the sixth. He also ran down a shot to left-center by Trent Grisham in the bottom of the ninth, racing over from where he was positioned in right-center.

“He’s a good player,’’ Carlos Mendoza said. “Not only offensively, where he’s finally getting some results, but the way he played center field.”

Taylor’s dominance in The Bronx isn’t limited to when Cole is on the mound.

He entered Wednesday 9-for-25 with three homers in his career against the Yankees and his 1.167 OPS versus the Yankees is his highest against any team in which he has more than 25 plate appearances.

Opponent aside, Wednesday’s outburst came out of nowhere for Taylor.

In his previous seven games, he was just 2-for-16 with 10 strikeouts.
