Weekend Events Roundup: Seafair events, block parties and porchfests
Summer is in full swing and you can tell that’s the case by the absolutely bonkers amount of events going on this weekend throughout the evergreen state. In Tacoma, there will be music and a celebration of community. Porchfest is a community event in the central neighborhood just off 6th Ave where neighbors volunteer their porches for an all-day event, hosting musicians and performers to an audience on their front lawn.
‘Intersections of Art and Activism’: King Youngblood’s Cameron Lavi-Jones on Bringing Rock to the New Generation, Corvallis Show
Cameron Lavi-Jones is the frontman of the modern era – genuine, approachable, genre-welcoming, and passionate about social change. The 25-year-old is the founder, vocalist, and guitarist of Seattle-based rock fourpiece King Youngblood, composed of himself, drummer Paul “Styx” Stoot, bassist Samy Garcia, and cellist Chet Peterson. Ahead of the group’s August 16 show at Common Fields in Corvallis, Oregon, Lavi-Jones sat down with the Commuter to talk about his band, their mission, and the power of a string section.
Illumination Learning Studio offering registration for Fall Toddler Music and Movement sessions
Illumination Learning Studio (ILS), our local kid’s music, drama, voice, and fine arts organization, has opened registration for their Fall Toddler Music and Movement sessions. This class lets toddlers and their parents or caregivers explore the joys of music, learning to recognize rhythms, practicing large motor coordination, and socializing with other families through song. Participants will learn through echoing and sequencing, rhythm and movement, ear training, and exploration of piano keys and instruments.

Iconic Mural to be Restored and Rededicated to the Japanese Community
One of Olympia’s most iconic murals, “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa” is soon to be restored and then rededicated to Olympia’s Japanese American community. The restoration work will be completed by local artists in partnership with the Olympia Japanese American Citizens League and Rainbow Community Arts.
Edmonds American Legion Post 66 announces winner of Gary Sinise drawing
During its July 4th community picnic, Edmonds American Legion Post 66 selected Steve Pennington, Sr. as the winner of a drawing for a framed original art piece of actor Gary Sinise, done by Edmonds artist Michael Reagan. The portrait, signed by both Sinise and Reagan, was donated by Reagan, with all proceeds going to assisting veterans and veteran organizations through the American Legion Post.
Marcus Simms Signs with the Seattle Seahawks
The All-UFL receiver and Mountaineer alumni is heading to the Emerald City. After having his contract terminated, Simms will get a second chance in the NFL after playing well for the Michigan Panthers in the NFL. Simms averaged 18.5 yards per reception in the UFL, getting 426 yards and 3 touchdowns. Notably, he’s found his niche on special teams. Simms had 201 kick return yards with the Panthers.

The Seattle Seahawks hope both starting offensive tackles can stay healthy after both players missed some time last season due to injuries. Their left tackle missed three games, while their right tackle missed 11. Stone Forsythe filled in at LT, while Jake Curhan, Forsythe (again), and Jason Peters filled in at RT.

P/K Tyler Prasuhn and the talented specialist, who is adept at both punting and kicking, said the Huskies were one of his early favorites at the time and a big reason why is because of his relationship with Jordan Paopao, Bailey McElwain and Jedd Fisch.

Congratulations to our KRKO Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete of the Month for April 2024; from the Archbishop Murphy High School Boys Tennis team, senior, Cole Balen. Cole won the 2024 Class 2A Boys Tennis Singles State Championship at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle. Along the way, he bested players from North Kitsap and Fort Vancouver in the opening rounds, before defeating Rafael Polito of Sammamish 6-1 (retired) in the semi-finals and finally winning the title over Sequim’s Garrett Little, 7-5, 6-1. Little had finished runner-up in the 2023 state tournament. With the win; Archbishop Murphy’s first state tennis champion; it sent the Wildcats home with a fourth-place team trophy. It wasn’t Balen’s first trip to state however; he teamed with his brother Sean and finished in seventh place in doubles at last year’s tournament. Off the court, Cole has volunteered hundreds of hours at Providence Swedish Medical Center; he carries a 3.97 grade point average, and plans to attend Gonzaga University. Archbishop Murphy Tennis Coach is Kathy Kenney; athletic director is Jeff Latta.
