We asked for your input on the South Shore's best place for ice cream .

As always, the faithful readers of The Patriot Ledger came through for us.

In a resounding decision, you have told us that the best ice cream on the South Shore can be found at Frozen Freddie's in Quincy, which earned more votes than the next four contenders combined.

The Quincy spot garnered more than 45% of the votes. The runner-up was Cream in Abington.

The poll drew more than 20,000 votes from around the world. Most came from the contiguous United States, but single votes were recorded from Puerto Rico, Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Morocco.

What's the scoop at Frozen Freddie's?

Frozen Freddie's has been on Washington Street in Quincy for 30 years. It's a seasonal shop, so it opens in late March or early April and closes at the end of October.

When the original owner, Dawn Gaffney, decided it was time to retire this year and sell the business, Julie Mckeon and Stephanie Kozlowski immediately knew they wanted to take over. Both Mckeon and Kozlowski worked at the ice cream shop for 24 seasons.

"This is something we've known we wanted to do for a long time. We’ve been there since we were kids," Mckeon said. "It's a part of me. ... It's like a second home."

Frozen Freddie's has a small seating area inside and benches outside for customers to enjoy their ice cream. It's an old-school shop, with photographs and sports memorabilia on the walls and a candy and toy section for kids where everything is $4 or less.

What's on the menu at Frozen Freddie's?

Mckeon said the ice cream at Frozen Freddie's comes from Bliss Bros. Dairy. There are 37 flavors, including hard frozen yogurt and sorbet.

The shop's top sellers depend on the weather, Mckeon said. On really hot days, customers gravitate toward sorbet and sherbet, while they enjoy hot fudge sundaes and the traditional flavors such as chocolate, coffee and vanilla on the cooler days.

Overall, Mckeon said vanilla and coffee are their most popular flavors, followed by Dirty Water, which is Colombian coffee ice cream with cookie crumble and chocolate chips.

As for something a little different, Mckeon recommended Monkey Bones, which is banana-based ice cream with chocolate chips, graham cracker flakes and peanut butter swirl.
