Drinking water for communities down the bayou is still safe, Lafourche Parish President Archie Chaisson said. <nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate> Emergency officials were notified at 7:50 a.m. of a “potential crude oil release,” Chaisson told reporters at a news conference in Raceland. They discovered the oil was entering Bayou Lafourche from a storm water canal near the intersection of Highway 308 and Highway 182 in Raceland. The source of the spill is the Crescent Midstream Crude Oil Facility, which Chaisson said contacted the parish and is following its approved incident response plan. The source has been secured, the crude oil is now contained, and federal, state and local agencies have been notified, according to the parish president. <nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate> Contractors with Crescent Midstream are leading the cleanup efforts, Chaisson said. Michael Smith, a spokesman for Crescent Midstream, said the crude oil release into a nearby stormwater canal was “exacerbated” by recent heavy rains. What exactly caused the spill from the facility and how much oil was released is under investigation, he said. Chaisson said the request to conserve water comes as the Louisiana Department of Health works with the parish to determine next steps to ensure the safety of the drinking water supply. Crude oil has not yet reached the intake at the Lockport water treatment plant, which provides water for all points south of Highway 182, Chaisson said. “We’re just asking the public to really just conserve a little bit of water, just in case we have to shut things down for a period of time,” Chaisson said. “We have enough water in the clear wells and in the tanks to supply that water.” <nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate> In the meantime, the bayou is closed to mariners from the Highway 182 bridge to the Salt Water Control Structure in Lockport to aid response efforts. A brief thunderstorm Saturday afternoon delayed recovery efforts on the bayou, but Smith said the immediate response of containment crews earlier in the day has helped mitigate the spill’s impact. Emergency responders are working in and along Bayou Lafourche from the Highway 182 bridge in Raceland to U.S. Highway 90. Chaisson asked that residents along the bayou avoid impeding crews from accessing the bayou. Bayou Lafourche provides drinking water for Assumption, Lafourche, Terrebonne and portions of Ascension parish. The area down-bayou from the spill gets its supply from the water plant in Lockport, which serves customers all the way down to Port Fourchon. <nbtemplate data-id="AdPlaceholder" data-content="JTdCJTdE"></nbtemplate> Grand Isle has its water supply piped in from Jefferson Parish. Smith said a wildlife hotline has been set up (832) 514-9663 for reporting oiled wildlife. There have already been some reports of animals covered in crude, Smith said, stressing that it’s “absolutely vital” for the public to use the hotline so experts can care for any affected wildlife. Another hotline for the public to report damages from the spill will be set up shortly, Smith said.
