    Underrated Museums In NYC

    2021-05-24

I love New York City museums, and I literally can't wait to spend the summer visiting some of my favories! I wanted to create this list of some of my all time favorite underrated museums. The museums that you don't typically hear about or think of when you think of NYC museums. but the museums that are absolutely worth a trip (or multiple) to!

    Tenement Museum

The Tenement Museum is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It’s a museum located in a historical tenement building, and had recreations of the tenement houses that existed there. Through a tour of this museum, you can experience the lives of immigrants who lived in the building in the mid to late 1800s. I love this museum, because it shares the story of real people and what their lives were like - it’s a great alternative if you aren’t into the traditional museum experience of just walking around looking at art or exhibits.

    Morgan Library & Museum

The Morgan Library and Museum is located right across from Grand Central Station and Penn Station in Murray Hill. This is not only a museum, but a library as well - which adds for a more unique museum experience for sure! This museum is known for their fine art, literature, and music. The library has a rich history that is so fascinating to learn about. So if you are in the mood to learn, or even just visit the absolutely gorgeous library - the Morgan Library & Museum is a MUST!

Location: 225 Madison Ave, New York, NY

Museum of the City of New York

And if you are living in New York City (or just visiting) why not take a trip to the Museum of the City of New York located on the Upper East Side. This museum is an art and history museum that was created to preserve and inform people of the history of NYC. If you love New York City, this is the place to celebrate the best city in the world, and it’s people and history!

    September 11 Memorial Museum

Next up is the September 11 Museum, located at the site of the World Trade Center. Again, this museum is probably pretty well known, but a newer museum that many people probably haven't had the chance to visit yet. If you haven’t been here yet, it’s a great place to pay respects and remember those whose lives were lost. In addition to the museum, you can visit the beautiful memorial where the twin towers once stood.

    Museum of FIT

And of course the fashionista in me had to include the Museum of FIT, located in the neighborhood of Chelsea in Manhattan. I love this museum because it’s the only museum in the city solely dedicated to the art and history of fashion. So if you are into fashion like me, or you just want to learn about something new - take a trip to the Museum of FIT!

Location: 227 W 27th St, New York, NY

    New York Botanical Garden

And lastly, we’ve got the New York Botanical Gardens located in the bronx. I know that botanical gardens aren’t normally thought of as a museum - but really the botanical gardens are a living museum! This is the perfect place to take a stroll through and not only learn about the greenery, but admire the beauty of the plant life too. Spending a few hours walking through the lovely gardens is a great way to spend your morning or afternoon!
