A Harrowing Ordeal in Mount Blue State Park

NEW SHARON, Maine — A New Sharon man who was reported missing on Monday was found by rescuers in a bog on Friday afternoon.

    Discovery and Search Efforts

Michael Altmaier was reported missing after failing to attend a scheduled meeting in Weld on Monday, according to Mark Latti, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife. The search for Altmaier intensified after his car was discovered Thursday night at the Mount Blue State Park overlook in Weld.

    A Stroke of Luck

On Friday morning, a search operation was launched in the park. Game Warden Kyle Hamilton and his K9 unit discovered Altmaier at 3:45 p.m. near a bog less than a mile from his car. According to Latti, Altmaier likely fell down an embankment on Monday, became disoriented, and ended up in the bog where he was unable to get up.

    Rescued and Recovering

Despite his four-day ordeal, Altmaier was found in “surprisingly good condition.” He was flown via helicopter out of the bog and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

    Community Relief

The successful rescue of Michael Altmaier brought immense relief to his family and the community. The coordinated efforts of local law enforcement and rescue teams highlight the importance of swift action and collaboration in search and rescue operations.
