WATERFORD, Maine — A teen was shot and wounded in the early hours of Saturday morning after a group of friends played a ding-dong-ditch prank on a Maine homeowner. The incident, which occurred around 1 a.m., has left the community in shock and raised concerns about the dangers of such pranks.

    Homeowner Opens Fire

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Vincent Martin, 30, opened fire on the teens after they knocked on his door and ran away. The sheriff’s office reported that Martin stepped outside his Waterford Road home and fired several shots, one of which struck a teenager in the right calf.

    Teen Hospitalized

The injured teen, whose age and gender have not been released, managed to walk into a hospital and is currently in stable condition. Authorities responding to the scene found a trail of blood leading to the house.

    Arrest and Charges

Vincent Martin was arrested and is facing multiple charges, including felony counts of elevated aggravated assault and aggravated reckless conduct, along with two misdemeanor counts of discharging a firearm. The sheriff’s office emphasized the seriousness of the charges and the potential dangers of such actions.

    TikTok Trend Blamed

This incident is part of a larger trend popularized on TikTok known as the "Door Knock" challenge, where teens bang on or kick a door and run away. Earlier this year, a police department in Texas warned against participating in this social media craze, highlighting the risk of homeowners mistaking the prank for a burglary and potentially using lethal force.

    Community Reaction

The shooting has sparked a debate within the community about the appropriateness and safety of such pranks. While some argue that the teens were merely having fun, others stress the potential dangers and the need for caution in a world where homeowners may react with violence.

As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a seemingly harmless prank can escalate into a life-threatening situation.
