Major Search in Gray Linked to Portland Shooting

GRAY, Maine — In a significant development, Portland police and several state and local law enforcement agencies conducted a search warrant at a residence in Gray on Friday evening. This action is part of the ongoing investigation into the Forest Avenue shooting that has left the community on edge.

    Details of the Shooting

The Forest Avenue shooting incident occurred on Tuesday night around 8:45 p.m. near Merrill's Corner. Four people were rushed to the hospital following the incident. Tragically, one of the victims, 54-year-old Susan McHugh, succumbed to her injuries, and her death has been ruled a homicide. The conditions of the other victims have not been disclosed by the authorities.

    Ongoing Investigation

The Portland Police Department has maintained a tight lid on the details of the investigation. As of Wednesday, no suspects had been taken into custody. Major Robert Martin of the Portland police emphasized the importance of discretion in sharing information. "In situations like this, information is very fluid, and details are changing all the time," Martin stated. "It is prudent and strategic to ensure all information is correct. In cases like this, with a homicide and a forthcoming prosecution, we are only allowed to release details that the Attorney General's office says we can release."

    Witness Account

A witness to the law enforcement response in Gray described a dramatic scene to NEWS CENTER Maine. "Around 4:30 [p.m.] the whole street was filled with SUVs. The armored vehicle was blocking the driveway," said the witness, who wished to remain anonymous. They also reported seeing a U-Haul emerge from the driveway carrying a black Harley Davidson motorcycle.

    Law Enforcement Presence

The search operation involved multiple units, including an armored vehicle and several cruisers, which largely cleared the area by 8 p.m. Friday. A few law enforcement vehicles continued to linger at the scene, with Portland police deferring questions to their criminal investigation division. The Maine State Police tactical team was also present to assist in the operation.

    Public Assistance Requested

Portland police are urging anyone with information related to the shooting or the investigation to come forward. People can contact the Portland Police Department at 207-874-8575. Additionally, tips can be texted by sending the keyword PPDME and a message to 847411.
