Portland, Maine — A devastating shooting near Morrill's Corner last week has left a community in mourning and a Maine man in custody. Aaron Karp, 47, of Naples, was arrested Thursday evening on a murder charge related to the tragic events of July 30, which resulted in the death of one woman and injuries to three men.

    The Incident Unfolds

The Portland Police Department reported that the shooting occurred around 8:45 p.m. in the vicinity of 1155 Forest Ave, the address of a Meineke Car Care Center. Susan McHugh, 54, of Gray, succumbed to her injuries from a gunshot wound, with the Chief Medical Examiner ruling her death a homicide. The other victims, a 51-year-old man from Gray, a 48-year-old man from Yarmouth, and a 45-year-old man from New Hampshire, were taken to Maine Medical Center.

    Surveillance Footage and Police Response

Surveillance video from the Meineke parking lot captured the chaos, with 18 gunshots heard in the footage. Portland police advised residents to shelter in place on the night of the shooting, lifting the order the following morning once the immediate threat was deemed over.

    Investigation and Arrest

Karp turned himself in at the Portland Police Station after learning about the warrant for his arrest. He is now held at Cumberland County Jail without bail. No other arrests have been made as the investigation continues.

    Community Reaction and Police Statement

Portland Police Chief Mark Dubois addressed the community's frustration over the perceived lack of transparency. "Our top priority in every case is to ensure the individuals responsible are brought to justice," he stated, emphasizing the need for certain details to remain confidential during active investigations.

    Appeal for Witnesses

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses can contact investigators at 207-874-8575 or by texting "PPDME" and a message to 847411.

The community remains shaken by the tragic events, but the swift actions of law enforcement provide a measure of reassurance as the investigation unfolds.
