If you missed the 75th Anniversary Howard County Fair, don't despair. Next year's fair will be August 6th - August 13th, 2022! We had the opportunity to go to the fair this August and get a taste of what it offers. I'll be discussing our fair-going experience and you can decide if this fair is right for you.

    Rides, Tickets, and Lines

To get into the fair, we had to wait in an exceptionally long line, but it was rather speedy. Entry cost was $10 over the age of thirteen and $5 for seniors (age 62+). Everything needed to be paid for in cash, so they had three ATMs set up right outside the fairgrounds for people to grab bills.

We took out approximately $50.00 for the fair experience, and we didn't even go on any rides. The food was incredibly expensive, but that's to be expected with county fairs.

There was a large variety of rides, from twisters to miniature roller coasters, carousels, and drop rides, but the lines were quite long. The line to get ride tickets was gigantic, so we didn't bother. We instead focused on having dinner and dessert at the fair and enjoying the outdoors.

There are a ton of food options at this fair. I had a delicious bratwurst with sauerkraut and mustard, and my boyfriend had a falafel sandwich. The bratwurst was flawless, but the falafel was a bit dry. They didn't add very much sauce as you can see, but that's what the condiment stations are for.

We also had a delicious fried onion, very similar to the famous Bloomin' Onion. The sauce was pretty similar, too. This was one of our better purchases, but the lemonade we bought with it was not. It was pricey and nothing special. Still, fair lemonade is kind of a ritual for fair-goers, so to each their own.

As we closed out the night, we grabbed our desserts to-go. My boyfriend got his favorite fair snack, a frozen cheesecake dipped in chocolate, and I waited in a half-hour line to get fried Oreos, which were easily the best food I'd had that night, right after the bratwurst. They were 100% worth the wait, and I recommend you try them at some point if you haven't already.

    Final Thoughts

The fair was packed and was most definitely not a great idea to attend due to the pandemic this year. Hopefully, things will be different next year. I'd recommend trying to go early in the morning to beat the lines so you can actually get some ride tickets. Bring more money (in cash) than you think you'll need because snacks will really eat away at your budget.

Hope to see you at the Howard County Fair in 2022!
