RAHWAY, NJ — On Saturday, June 15, at 4 p.m., the Rahway Elks #1075 held their annual Flag Day celebration. The ceremony was held in the upstairs lodge room and hospitality was served in the grill room immediately following.

The event was open to the community. Lodge Treasurer Doreen Duffy and Secretary Kelly Mazza decorated the grill room beautifully and organized a delicious spread of food.

It was a lovely ceremony with the Rahway High School Marine Corps JROTC presenting colors, Antlers (the lodge's junior members) and essay contest winners carrying flags, and so many community members coming out to support the Elks.

Leading Knight and Americanism Chair Kristina Petti organized the guest list and program. The Elks gave awards to the Americanism Essay Contest winners, and one student, a repeat winner of the contest, read her essay aloud.

All 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place local winners were awarded with a certificate and gift card.

Each year, the Elks hold an Americanism Essay Contest and award prizes up to the national level. This year's topic was "What Does the Bill of Rights Mean to Me?" Next year's topic will be "What Does Patriotism Mean To Me?” The contest is open to 5th-8th graders. The deadline is December 15, 2024.
