RAHWAY, NJ — NIEER, the National Institute of Early Education Research, is building a pipeline of Latiné early childhood education leaders through the Building Early Learning Latiné Educators (BELLE) leadership academy. This year, a team of Rahway teachers and administrators have been accepted to Cohort IV, which begins in the Fall of 2024.
During this year-long partnership, BELLE hopes to develop a shared expertise centered on a reflective coaching model approach,
As the organization puts it, “Through the support of the cohort model, with embedded mentors and implementation of the DLL [dual language learners] strategies, BELLE participants will possess the knowledge and confidence to pursue leadership positions.”
Representing Rahway Public Schools this year are Ms. Diana Arboleda, second grade bilingual teacher at Franklin Elementary School, Ms. Lorena Salamanca, pre-K dual language teacher at Franklin Elementary School, and Ms. Elizabeth Conde, pre-K teacher at St. Thomas Preschool.
As part of the application process, staff members were nominated by district leadership. The program requires the applicants to commit to mentoring those they nominate.
“This was a collaborative initiative between myself and Jasmine Akauola, Program Supervisor of World Languages and ESL/Bilingual Education. Over the past two years, Mrs. Akauola and I have worked closely to align the work we do and how we support our bilingual students,” said Mr. Mykel Brooks, Director of Early Childhood Education.
