Scenic Rainier City Park is the location of Back to our Roots, a car show and community event featuring The Decades Band, outdoor games, raffles, vendors and a beer garden.

Back to our Roots takes place this weekend: Friday, July 26; Saturday, July 27; and Sunday, July 28. The event started four years ago, and has since found a home in Rainier.

“Back to our Roots was started out of a love for our roots and the people and things that make us who we are,” community events coordinator Angela Wayman said.

On Friday the event kicks off with praise and worship taking place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday features a car show, The Decades Band from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Cruisin’ A Street from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In the past, the car show has featured vehicles from the 1920s. If you’re going to register to win one of the trophies, it’s $25.

Sunday, enjoy cornhole tournaments from noon to 3 p.m. and the Sweetwater Band from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The Highway 30 Cornhole Club is going to come and put that on,” Wayman said.

The event is in its fourth year, according to Wayman.

“For the first two years, we were in Scappoose, and last year we went to Rainier,” she said, noting that Rainier worked out well as a venue.

“We like it in Rainier,” she said. “We have a big park, it worked out really well last year. We had a lot of people come. We have outdoor games and there’s a playground there.”

Wayman said Rainier City Park has a lot of amenities.

“It overlooks the river,” she said. “There is a swimming area for the kids. The park has a really nice gazebo so you can sit and watch the boats. There are a lot of shaded areas, picnic tables and playgrounds.”
