Cool & gloomy Monday morning turns comfy and sunny this afternoon

    By Bradley Wells,

Monday morning a few showers continue to push through but the trend of the day will be drying out and clearing up. As clouds fade through the morning, more and more sunshine can be expected. Just don’t expect it to help with the temperatures with northwest winds keeping us below average. Many in the mountains will struggle into the low to mid 70s while those lower in elevation reach the mid to upper 70s.

Tonight with humidity levels dropping and clear skies, temps cool quickly into the 60s by 10pm and mid to upper 50s for the pre-dawn hours Tuesday. River valley fog is likely for those early morning commuters.

Tuesday high pressure builds in right over the region for a crystal clear sunshine filled day. Winds shift more westerly providing a nice warm up with many pushing 80 degrees by noon. Highs jump into the low to mid 80s by the late afternoon. We’ll see clouds increasing into the overnight hours as a cold front is expected to arrive Wednesday. A stray shower overnight and pre-dawn hours is possible but many will have to wait until Wednesday for any significant rain chance.

Wednesday a mostly cloudy start with a few showers here or there for the morning hours as a cold front marches east. A humid day pushing temps into the mid and upper 80s. Timing and how much sun we actually see in the day will determine our severe weather threat when the cold front finally crosses the region.

By the afternoon, thunderstorms and downpours are expected. A storm or two may be on the strong side with damaging winds and heavy rain leading to pooling will be the main threats. Heavy rain on dry ground simply runs off and collects in the lowest area, often roadways so watch for ponding while driving.

Wednesday night we’re still mostly cloudy with showers and storms beginning to fade. Temps hold steady in the 60s for a muggy and damp night.

Thursday sunshine will be back as clouds clear through the morning. Temps take another hit in the rollercoaster week struggling to reach the 80 degree mark for most. Humidity levels drop a touch making the day feel comfortable.

Friday our winds change direction again allowing us to warm up back into the mid and upper 80s. Humidity runs a touch higher for the summer feel. A few fair weather clouds into the afternoon and evening but we stay dry with high pressure in place.

Saturday a few clouds in the morning give way to an isolated shower or two. Temps still manage the mid and upper 80s with a very humid feel to the day. A cold front is expected into the evening bringing heavy rain and a few rumbles of thunder. An isolated strong storm is possible but widespread coverage isn’t. Rain will be off and on into Sunday morning.

Sunday a few morning showers and rumble of thunder is possible but once again the trend will be clearing. Sunshine will peek through broken cloud cover for the afternoon but temps once again drop back into the low 80s while the mountains just nudge the mid to upper 70s.

In your extended forecast, the unsettled pattern continues but not enough rain to help with our abnormally dry run through June. Long range forecasts continue to show hot days leading up to the 4th of July week with equal chances of rain or sunshine so only time will tell. This time of year, tropical system can often disrupt long range forecasts and with an above average year forecasts for the hurricane season, we’ll be keeping a close eye on changes for Independence Day activities!
