Alerts Issued for Our Region
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH for McDowell, Wyoming, Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas and Pocahontas counties until 10 PM. Thunderstorms capable of torrential rainfall and damaging wind gusts are possible this evening.
Tonight features scattered strong to severe thunderstorms, capable of producing damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall. Severe weather is not expected to be widespread, but a few strong thunderstorms are expected and will be most prominent before 10 pm. We’ll see shower chances with embedded rumbles continue through the early morning hours as a cold front – which is the driver in causing our severe weather chances – pushes east and away from the region. A lingering mountain sprinkle is possible toward dawn, otherwise we’ll be mostly cloudy with temperatures dropping tonight into the low 60s.
Thursday features the risk for a stray isolated shower in the morning with plenty of sunshine returning as we head into the afternoon with high pressure setting in. We’ll see high temperatures cooler once again with a northerly breeze kicking in with highs around 80.
Friday brings the heat back into the picture as our area of high pressure from Thursday shifts east. We’ll pick up a southerly flow, which will bring the heat and the humidity back into the region. That combination will be enough to pop an isolated shower or two in the afternoon with highs in the mid 80s.
Saturday provides the returning risk for scattered showers and storms, mainly in the afternoon, with another cold front pushing into the region. There should be plenty of dry time for the day but by the afternoon, storms will be scattered with highs temperatures in the mid 80s. Some storms could produce gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall.
Sunday continues our risk for scattered showers and storms, with the best chance for storms around lunchtime as a cold front passes through. That will cool temperatures a little for the second half of the weekend into the start of next week with highs in the low 80s Sunday. Some storms could once again produce heavy rainfall.
Monday will be dry and comfy with low humidity with high pressure once again in control. We’ll see high temperatures in the low 80s.
Tuesday keeps the sunshine going and we’ll be a little more summer-like once again as high temperatures jump back up into the mid 80s.
Wednesday sees partly sunny skies, but an increase in humidity will spark an isolated shower or two in the afternoon with high temperatures in the upper 80s.
Looking ahead in your extended forecast, we’ll see temperatures very summer-like but not as hot as what we’ve seen recently. A combination of heat and humidity will provide at least the chance for a few thunderstorms in the atmosphere with high temperatures remaining in the 80s.
