RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Six Raleigh men are facing several charges in connection to kidnapping and robbing someone earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Justice announced on Monday.

A federal grand jury returned an indictment on June 21, charging the men with kidnapping, robbery, use of a firearm during a violent crime as well as conspiracy, DOJ officials said. Some of the men were also charged with separate gun and drug offenses.

“Two years ago, we launched a new multi-agency partnership to drive down violent crime in Raleigh,” U.S. Attorney Michael Easley said in a statement. “Today’s announcement shows the next phase of our strategy: a proactive focus on federal charges for violent offenders. We want Raleigh citizens to know our partners are working around the clock to keep our city safe.”

According to the indictment, the following men conspired to kidnap and rob an adult victim:

    • Mario Scott (age 21)
    • Tyferia Shakur Sherrod (age 23)
    • Donta Lamont Bush Jr. (age 24)
    • Hasheem Langston (age 23)
    • Quest Jaquan Davis (age 29)
    • Deivon Jalil Spidle (age 22)

“Conspirators allegedly attached a GPS tracking device to the victim’s car in order to track and target him prior to the crimes,” according to a news release from the Department of Justice.

On Jan. 15, the men allegedly confronted the victim and held him at gunpoint, stealing jewelry and cash from him, DOJ officials said.

Afterward, DOJ officials said the men forced the victim into a vehicle and drove him to other locations in Wendell and Knightdale, trying to force the victim to get family members to give the kidnappers more money.

“During the course of the kidnapping, conspirators allegedly tied the victim’s hands and feet with duct tape and put a trash bag over his head,” the news release stated. “Some of the conspirators also allegedly used the victim’s apartment access information to break into his home and steal additional items.”

When his family members did not provide the money, the victim was told he would be killed, according to the indictment. The victim fought off one of the men and was able to escape out of a moving vehicle, but was shot in the process, DOJ officials said.

All six men allegedly involved in the conspiracy were charged with the following:

    • Conspiracy to commit kidnapping
    • Kidnapping and aiding and abetting
    • Conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery
    • Hobbs Act robbery and aiding and abetting
    • Use and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence and aiding and abetting

If convicted, each suspect faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, as well as a maximum possible term of life in prison, DOJ officials said.

Meanwhile, Davis is charged with charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Spidle is also facing an additional charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

“This is another example of how collaborative relationships between the RPD and our federal partners facilitated through the Violent Crime Action Plan (VCAP) reduce the drivers of violence by focusing on prolific offenders and the criminal activity they propagate,” Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson said in a statement.
