SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH: Is in effect until 7pm, Friday, July 5th for Nicholas, Fayette, Greenbrier, Raleigh, Summers, Wyoming, Mercer, McDowell, & Tazewell county.
A watch is issued when conditions are right for severe storms to develop. In the hot and humid airmass we find ourselves in, a cold front will be able to use this energy for storm development. From 2pm- 7pm a line of storms is expected to cross the region with damaging winds, flash flooding, and blinding heavy rains. Use caution as this line moves through.
Friday morning showers and a rumble or two continue to filter out from Thursday’s system but another looks to push in for the afternoon. Some dry time helps temps push into the upper 80s with very humid air in place for that summer feel.
A strong line of thunderstorms is expected to push into the region this afternoon with the best chance of severe weather from 2pm – 7pm. Damaging winds will be the primary threat of 365-50mph. Under severe storms, winds above 60mph are possible. Heavy rain will cause visibility issues and street flooding as runoff collects along the road in the the lower dips. Watch for flooded roadways.
Tonight showers move east and by 8pm we’ll be left with light rain which will fade as the night goes on. A damp and humid night with low in the upper 60s.
Saturday a few morning showers likely as our Friday system continues to push out of the region. Highs take a small hit dropping back into the low to mid 80s but it’ll be muggy regardless. Afternoon rumbles possible before clearing out making Saturday a good day to keep an hear out for thunder but hopeful for a nice summer afternoon and evening. We’ll clear up into the overnight as high pressure builds in.
Sunday is drier over Saturday with a mix of sun and clouds. Temps manage to push the mid and upper 80s with extra humidity. Overall, a nice way to end the holiday weekend.
Monday sun and clouds and southwest winds keep temps moving up into the upper 80s by the evening. An afternoon shower here or there is expected thanks to the heating of the day and extra humidity as a little disturbance works through. Isolated showers remain possible into the overnight.
Tuesday we’ll manage to warm up into the 80s once again with a mix of sun and clouds. An afternoon downpour & rumble of thunder also possible with the summer pattern holding for another day.
Wednesday is another warm and humid day with sun and clouds. Plenty of dry time but once again a few pop up showers and t-storms in the late afternoon to early evening. They will rain themselves out by the nighttime hours. Highs manage the low to mid 80s with lows back into the muggy 60s.
Thursday again feels sticky with humidity high in the morning. Temps manage the mid to upper 80s by the afternoon and outside of a stray shower, we’re looking in good shape with mostly sunny skies.
In Your Extended Forecast we look to get in on a soggier run which will be very beneficial for the on-going drought conditions. While any rain is good, the best to help with drought is a long duration, slow building event which doesn’t look to be the case with the scattered nature of showers and storms well into next week.
