    Friday marks hottest day ever on record for the Triangle area

    RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Raleigh-Durham International Airport recorded a high temperature of 106 degrees in the Triangle on Friday.

    This is the hottest day in recorded history for the Triangle. The heat index was also the hottest ever at 118 degrees.

    Records go as far back as 1887 in the Triangle. Heat index didn’t really come along until the 1970s.

    ALERT DAY: ‘Dangerous’ temperatures Friday prompt excessive heat warning in central NC

    Earlier in the day, the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning across central North Carolina and the northern Sandhills region. This warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

    The following counties are listed under the warning:

    • Wake
    • Durham
    • Johnston
    • Orange
    • Chatham
    • Granville
    • Vance
    • Warren
    • Halifax
    • Franklin
    • Nash
    • Edgecombe
    • Wilson
    • Lee
    • Harnett

    This marks the first excessive heat warning in the Triangle this year, according to CBS 17 Storm Team Meteorologist Dave Downey.
