RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — People in the Triangle and Republican officials in North Carolina are reacting to the news of a shooting at former President Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania.

People said they are shocked and saddened.

“My first reaction is, wow, what is going on in this world?” Asim Langhorn said.

Langhorn and his friends were at Moore Square Park when they heard the news of the shooting.

“And one person got murdered. That’s very sad,” Diedra Thompson said.

Langhorn said it came as a shock.

“It almost feels like it’s not real and it makes you question what is really going on behind the scenes,” he said.

He and his friends strongly condemned the violence.

“I do not support it. Zero percent, zero percent. Unacceptable,” Langhorn said.

Thompson added, “They’re mad about Trump or whatever, but that doesn’t give you the right to kill nobody. You don’t have to come with no guns and be violent. Just have your own opinion and let other people have their own opinion then go about your business.”

Prominent state Republicans also weighed in, including gubernatorial candidate and Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson.

“We are Americans and must unify in the fact that violence has no place in political discourse,” Robinson said in a video posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.

NC GOP chairman Jason Simmons released a statement on X, reading in part, “The assassination attempt on President Trump is a horrendous act which has no place [in] our country…The people of North Carolina stand with President Trump and against evil acts of political violence.”

    Langhorn also called for unity.

“I think it’s vital that us as a people, we come together and we lift each other up and we realize that we’re all connected,” he said.

Republican officials, including Simmons, also praised law enforcement and The Secret Service for their response.
