RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As a heat advisory was in effect for much of central North Carolina Sunday and Monday, part of the state is in for even higher temperatures, forecasters say.
The counties of Gates, Pasquotank, Chowan and Perquiman are already under a heat advisory until 7 p.m. Sunday during which heat index values up to 106 are expected.
But, on Monday, the heat index risk for those four counties is several degrees higher, the National Weather Service said. Camden and western Currituck counties are also part of the excessive heat warning on Monday.
“For the Excessive Heat Warning, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 110 to 112 are expected,” weather service forecasters said.
The National Weather Service in Raleigh initially issued a heat advisory for Monday for central North Carolina between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. That advisory is still in effect, but was superseded by the excessive heat warning for several counties.
The excessive heat warning in northeast North Carolina includes the cities of Cape Colony, Jacocks, Corapeake, Mavaton, Elizabeth City, Hancock, Saint Johns, Valhalla, Edenton, Macedonia, and Woodville.
“Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,” forecasters said.
