RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A new study using data from the United States Lifesaving Association says North Carolina is one of the most dangerous states for swimmers.

The USLA data was analyzed by Florida personal injury lawyers Anidjar & Levine, who looked at the amount of people at each location and the total number of rescues between 2021 to 2023 to calculate the rate of rescues per 100,000 beachgoers.

The Tar Heel State, known for its long coastline and many beaches, is the No. 8 most dangerous state to go swimming, according to the analysis.

The study said 4,217 people were saved in North Carolina out of a total of 17,138,482 beachgoers between 2021 and 2023. That amounts to 24.6 rescues per 100,000 visitors.

North Carolina is the only southern state among the study’s top 10 most dangerous. Oregon came in at No. 1, followed by New York and Maryland to round out the top three.
