RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A new skyscraper is coming to Raleigh, and it’s going to be one of the tallest buildings in the city.

Real estate company CBRE said ground is set to break on the 37-story luxury apartment building by the end of the year. It will beat out The Eastern in North Hills by one story and PNC Plaza in downtown Raleigh by five stories. There will be 306 apartments in the tower.

The skyscraper is part of a new mixed-use development called The Creamery, sitting at the site of the historic creamery building.

“Just seeing my hometown come to be this boisterous city, it’s amazing,” said Alexis Mitchell of Raleigh.

CBRE said the existing creamery building will stay put, but with more retail. There will be two new towers with apartments, additional retail, office space, a public parking garage, and plaza.

Sunny Miller owns Adara Spa, a few blocks from The Creamery.

“Downtown has evolved so much,” said Miller. “It used to be little small businesses, little small shops, and small buildings, so, it’s part of the evolution. I do miss the smaller, quaint side of downtown Raleigh that we did have.”

She hopes the tallest building on Glenwood South makes room for small businesses too.

“Unfortunately, the rent downtown is cost prohibitive, so a lot of smaller business find themselves having to go to smaller areas or areas that don’t have as much visibility,” Miller said.
